Today was orientation day,
and after getting lost in the maze that is UQ I finally discovered the room
where our lecture was being held. Being
15 minutes late, the theatre was packed to the brim with students meaning I had
to find a seat all the way in the back corner.
Dr Bruce Redman seemed like a likeable chap with a very dry sense of
humour. He outlined the assessments and
topics that would be covered this semester, and while I had got a gist of the
course from reading the profile, it was very exciting to hear it outlined
by someone who demonstrated a genuine enthusiasm for the subject.
The first lecture was a fairly superficial
overview of what we would be looking at this semester, and covered very simple
points. I always found the Rupert
Murdoch/News of the World scandal very interesting so it was great to have a
bit of a discussion about this issue. I did not agree with Redman’s point
though that Gillard government’s media inquiry was indulgent and an attack on
free speech. I think the fact that Murdoch infects 70 percent of our media with
his right wing bias is definitely cause for concern, and an attack on balanced
news reporting. Despite this minor
annoyance I had a great time hearing about what would be covered this semester.
I am very excited to start JOURN 1111
this semester and look forward to developing my journalistic skills!
